Joan Kirera - Professional Therapist

Speaker, Therapist, Mental Health Educator

I started my career by pursuing a professional course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering – telecommunications option at the Kenya Polytechnic (now Technical University of Nairobi) and practiced for a few years.

While working in "electricity construction", I interacted with people who shared very intimate details of their lives yet I did not know how to help them. Sometimes I would just listen, other times I would advise or just pray with them. These experiences made me question my methods of helping.

I fellowshipped in a church in the city where we had many people who visited just once, and in many occasions, these walk-in members would pull me aside and share their lives – the kind of deep sharing you do not expect from people meeting you for the first time. This got me thinking about what to do in order to be a better helper to these many people who seemed to trust me.

I had a talk with the pastor who walked me the journey of understanding my purpose. She asked me to consider taking psychology so that I could learn the skills, that way I would not just pass my opinions to people but I would understand human behavior.

Pastor's words did not make any sense to me at the time and it took a while before it all finally made sense. God bless Pastor Sally Githinji who was then a trained marriage and family therapist and was very helpful throughout my training.

I chose to pursue a diploma course in counseling psychology then specialized in marriage and family therapy and later invested in a bachelor's degree in counseling psychology. The hardest part was the transition from engineering to psychology/marriage and family therapy. There were so many uncertainties, so many fears, so many questions that no one could answer.

The one important decision that helped me to move on is when I started taking a journey from within, a journey towards my emotional healing, personal growth and discovery, a journey of finding myself. This journey was my inner motivation to help others find themselves and this is my life's purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your guide to understanding therapy, counseling sessions, and Joan Kirera's expertise in mental health.

Is therapy for those who are completely unstable mentally?
Therapy is for everyone - we all have pain to heal and areas to grow from time to time. Everyone needs a therapist. While someone can learn by themselves, therapy shortens the learning and growth curve. It also provides an environment to let go and heal pain.
How do I tell that the therapist is going to help considering everyone is a behavior expert lately?
Well, everyone is not a behavior expert. While most people have improved self-awareness, not everyone has capacity to walk you to your mental wellness. Since health, physical and mental, is a personal responsibility, the potential client needs to do their due diligence to ensure the therapist they have interest in is trained and competent. Good reviews are an added advantage.
How many sessions do I need?
While the question is important and valid, especially for time and finances planning, it is difficult to tell before psychological assessment happens. Psychological assessment happens on the first day of therapy.
What happens if I don't align with my therapist?
It is possible not to connect with a therapist and that is okay. I believe that no human being is for everyone. The reasons for this lack of connection range from competence, personality, and personal reasons. It is okay for the client to communicate their reasons to the therapist and ask for referral or end the sessions and find another therapist. If the reason for ending sessions is because therapy is hard or that the client is struggling to do the work, then even the next therapist may not be helpful unless the client puts in the work.
Can I see two therapists at the same time?
Two therapists at the same time may not be useful unless one is a couple therapist and the other is an individual therapist. If both have the same competence, then it may not be useful.
Can I come to you if you are therapist for my family member(s)?
Yes, a family therapist is able to see many family members while being neutral and non-judgmental.
Is the service charged?
Yes, it is a professional service therefore has a cost implication.
Is there assurance that I will get better?
So long as both the therapist and the client are committed, the goal for therapy will be achieved.
Is it true that therapists are just paid to listen?
This is just one part. Therapy allows you to talk without censorship and do so in a safe environment. The other part of therapy would be equipping the client with tools to deal with whatever part of life that has challenged them.
